Prof. Slobodan Kaštela, Ph. D is a retired scientific advisor and professor of traffic law at the Faculty of Traffic and Transport Sciences in Zagreb. He was born in 1941 in Novigrad (Dalmatia, Croatia). In 1963 he graduated from the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, in 1967 he passed the Croatian bar exam. In 1991 he obtained his LL.M. degree at the Faculty of Economics, and in 2000 his Ph.D. degree at the Faculty of Traffic and Transport Sciences in Zagreb.
He served as a secretary of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts for thirty-four years. He has published more than 110 scientific and professional papers, and has actively participated in numerous national and international conferences. He has edited 29 books, anthologies and monographs mainly published by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is the author of several books and textbooks, among which is Air Transport Law, 2001. He is a co-author of the textbook Fundamentals of air law, 1998, and of the university textbook Transport law, 2008 (together with prof. Ladislav Horvat, Ph. D.), which won the Josip Juraj Strossmayer award in 2009 as the most successful scientific work published in 2008 in the field of social sciences. Together with prof. emeritus Ivo Grabovac, he authored the scientific monograph International and national sources of Croatian transport law, 2013. Since 2008 he has been the scientific head of the Institute for Scientific and Artistic Work of the Croatian Academy in Bjelovar. Since 1999, in addition to educational activities, he has been steadily involved as a researcher in research projects. From 2007 he headed the scientific project “Acquis in the field of transport”, financed by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.
He is a member of several national and international scientific and cultural associations and editorial boards of scientific journals. He has been a member of Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Vice President of the Academy’s Scientific Council for Transport and the Director of the Foundation of the Croatian Academy since its founding in 1993. He is a member of the World Academy of Art and Science.
